Services

Instrumentation and services are available to all researchers inside and outside of the university.

Researchers from the Northwestern University and the University of Chicago are provided internal rates as all UIC users. All other users can access services but at an external academic or external non-academic rate, which is determined using subsidy and market rates.

 

All users must register their funds before requesting service or scheduling equipment usage.

 

All users are responsible for their own laboratory safety training to be current during each use of the core facilities.

Description

This analysis is used to determine the mass of the molecule adducted to a cation (e.g.  [M+H]+ or [M+Na]+) or an anion (e.g. M+Cl]- or loss of H (e.g. [M-H]-) at high mass accuracy (4-5 decimal places) on one of the High Resolution LC/MS instruments (usually the Shimadzu LCMS IT-TOF).

The price for this analysis is the same whether LR or HR.  It is always run as an automated HR ESI experiment by flow injection using the LC auto-sampler.  APCI is available by special request, indicate on the Sample Submission Form that APCI is required.

If you require EI, CI or FAB, you need to order Low Resolution Analysis (Assisted) via EI/CI/FAB on GC-MATE for molecular weight determination or Exact Mass Analysis (Assisted) via EI/CI/FAB on GC-MATE for accurate mass.

Fee schedule: Exact Mass Analysis (Assisted) via EI/CI/FAB on JEOL GC-MATE II.

This analysis is used to determine the mass of the molecular ion [M+] at high mass accuracy (4 decimal places) and is usually performed via Electron Ionization (EI) by Direct Insertion Probe on relatively pure compounds.  Note that not all compounds will yield a molecular ion by EI as the ion may be too unstable. FAB and CI are rarely used as ESI usually works better.  If you require CI or FAB as the ionization technique, indicate it on the sample request form. If you check more than one ionization technique on the form we will bill for each one.

Accurate mass on the GCMate requires that first a Nominal (Low Resolution) spectrum be acquired in order to ascertain that the molecular ion [M+] can be seen with a high enough intensity that a high resolution spectrum with high signal to noise ratio can be attained.  If you don’t submit a low resolution spectrum (showing the molecular ion), we will perform a Low Resolution Analysis via EI/CI/FAB on GC-MATE service first and bill you for it. If you submit a low resolution spectrum using the requested ionization technique showing the molecular ion, we will not acquire a low resolution spectrum on the GCMate.  The two experiments require very different tune parameters and calibration settings.
